I mean you're playing with a small amount of cash so it doesn't really matter in term of expenses, the problem is the fact that during a downturn you're gonna have to pay the expenses while being negative for a long time. In context SOXL wouldn't have been profitable for 18 years if it existed in 2000 and you bought near the top of the bubble. So buying a leveraged ETF at the top and "average down" the investment for the long term rather than just pulling out could be a death sentence. But in general, the "scary" things you hear is just boomer propaganda.. unironically. For example, it's WAY better for you to simply buy SOXL, rather than buying an 1x semiconductor ETF with 3x margin, but they never talk about that because brokerages wants the interest from you buying on margin
