The only reason erc-20 tokens need smart contracts is because Ethereum doesnt *natively* support tokens. They're programmed in.
Cardano doesnt need smart contracts FOR TOKENS (it will use smart contracts for OTHER stuff), because it supports tokens natively, without needing to run a smart contract. So you can exchange tokens and burn them without paying the fees of a smart contract.
