996 is a controversial 911. that is when people became outraged over the switch to water cooling, that is when it used a newer engine that had troubles, and obviously it had those scrambled egg headlights. 996s are given a bad rap, so that is why they are so affordable.

997 is a little more proffered as that is when they refined the internals to improve reliability and the lights finally look cool. I would recommend this one but only in manual.
