29940306 No.29940306 [Reply] [Original]

I’m a fully employed mechanical engineer with a $75,000 salary, I have no debt and around $170,000 in savings. I live in my car to avoid having to pay rent because I am so averse to spending money. I still have an iPhone 5s that my parents got for me during college, that’s how I’m writing this. I shower at the gym, I get gym membership through company.

Nobody knows I live in my car, not even my parents. I can’t stop saving money, I keep saying once I hit a certain point I will be worthy of having a home or an apartment but once I hit that savings amount I just push it back further. I keep thinking I don’t have enough saved for an apartment, I think of all the bad things that could happen to me in succession (like getting injured or something and being unable to work, having to buy a new car etc) and then I would lose all my savings.

What should I do?

I am extremely risk averse, it has plagued me my entire life. I was getting weird looks wearing an N95 mask in grocery stores in Jan of 2020 but I didn’t care, I just didn’t want to take any chances until I understood the risk. As a child I use to look back and forth 8 or so times before crossing the street because I had to be sure there were no cars coming. It’s just how I am I guess.

I just feel I am too uneducated to be able to adequately pick the right investments at the moment, I am still trying to educate myself on basic investing principles and how a person goes about valuing a company. I agree with any anon here who suggests therapy. Everyone has a phobia of some sort. I'm similar to you, but my fear of spending comes from an uncertain future... That, and an aversion to growing attached to people or things due to said uncertainty. If you're afraid of losing that money, as counterintuitive as it may sound anon, you can have wealth that isn't fiat currency. Land is wealth and not only do you get to keep it but you get to enjoy it too.

I can relate to this. I was 20 when the financial crisis hit, my dad passed away the same day Lehman Bros went under, I spent the next few years struggling to survive. It’s affected me a lot and I always made sure to spend less than I make. I feel guilty when I splurge on anything, even though I can afford it. 12 years later though I’ve got 450k, no house yet.
