I learned Japanese whilst living in Japan/on my way to Japan, and what helped out a lot was going to bars and practicing on people. A lot of what's in written/formal Japanese translates differently when spoken, and it also helps you get a feel for the syntax. Can barely read though because I never took it past speaking to people
