Avalanche is in a completely different league than fantom. Avalanche enables enables high throughput, sub second finality whilst being able to scale to tens of thousands + validators. Fantom on the other hand has 39 and to be a validator you need a minimum of 3.175 million ftm (over $1.5 million) and even then numbers are restricted.

Avalanche is a platform of platforms where application specific blockchains can be built, using a variety of custom vms, permissioned or permissionless and rules that can be set for subnets to comply with regulation such as require validators to be in a certain jurisdiction or license/ meet GDPR requirements etc which will be a massive appeal to enterprises.

Avalanche also has a huge team of experts who have delivered an incredible amount I'm a very short amount of time, fantom has been live for like 2 and a half years and barely any adoption, with most of the work being done by andre.

It's not a zero sum game and there will be many blockchains, with avalanche being a platform of platforms with thousands of subnets each with potentially multiple blockchains within, the scope is just far larger.
