To stop the stock market from becoming too volatile and triggering another 1930. Happened a lot of times in the British stock exchange historically. Basically the problem is that retards trading with options and margins get called from flash crashes which makes things even worse and causes people to panic, etc.

Even crypto has these halts when all the exchanges go down at the same time whenever the price is crashing.
