Money itself is relative everywhere

$500 can literally warp someone's view of reality, whereas some people literally spend $500 as a snack before bed

Because unless you're super unlucky you're not going to lose much of that $500 in the short term, i.e. you've still got ~$500.

If you buy a new coat for $500, you're probably never going to sell that coat so that $500 is gone forever. And if you wanted to sell it, you'd only get like 33% the original price at best.
