It is not always true that risk and reward are proportional. Last year, one could have easily bought platinum for under $700 ounce. It is currently $1,263/ounce. There was not much risk at buying at under $700/ounce but it did take courage since the price had been in the dumps for years and it ultimately bottomed out near $625/ounce. Likewise, one could have bought the children of Standard Oil last year when all the talk was about everyone on the planet driving an EV within 5 or 10 years and no one needing crude oil for anything anymore.

Chevron is up about 60% from its bottom which admittedly was hard to catch. However, one could have relatively easily bought at a level that would have returned 33% plus the greater than 5% dividend. Exxon was beaten down far more and there were plenty of times to buy the stock to realize an approximately 60% gain with the divident of about *10%*!

Platinum and the oil majors were essentially bags of money sitting on the ground. People just had to pay attention and not be afraid to pick them up. To be clear: getting capital gains typically involves taking risk. However, there are many times when investors are not properly compensated for the risk they take and there are times when investors can be compensated for risk that is overstated. It is a game of expected returns and a successful investor should only be playing games where the expected return is a good deal better than 1.0.

That looks to be some dry ground, if you cant find a creek, look for a gulch where the water runs in the spring. Look for some bedrock where waters flowed in the past season, as well as the usual boulder patches i talk about. Take a few buckets of that material and pan that at the lake on that map maybe you will find something. If you run into a stream do as before, focus on bedrock, its your best bet for finding bigger gold.
