Don't even think about it. This profession isn't respected, it's basically Blue Collar+. Yes even software positions at le FAANG.

If you're not going to go to a real professional school (Med school, ivy league finance, or a top law school) then just become a NEET and buy crypto, or become Tyrone and fuck bitches all day. You might get shot before you turn 30 but you'll have lived life way more than Derek the Electrical Engineer will in his entire shitty existence will.

Middle class living is basically having blue balls 24/7.

Engineering used to be a highly respected career in the 80’s

Ever since the flooding of “muh Pajeet engineer can you do engineering just as well” companies have been hiring lower tier pajeet engineering positions work force in the millions. basically lowering wages and overall making engineering a low level profession that requires minimal intelligence as seen by corporate. Since they think a Pajeet can do it. As we move into the next decade engineering wages will continue declining as more pajeets who can’t even speak proper English flood the engineering job market. Even if you’re the best white engineer you will not make much more than a pajeet , and only a fraction of a finance major who does half your work. As you’ve noticed most engineers are people who lack social skills and would never make it in finance which requires social and interpersonal skills. Something Autists and pajeets will always lack .

Practically any degree combined with social skills will get you a decent job. If you possess true gregariousness / charm / confidence, you can actually be an idiot and you will still end up in management. I've seen it happen multiple times, people with no degree use their natural ability to put people at ease and elevate their mood to huge advantages.

Definitely take the degree if you have support / generous scholarships. Most people that age aren't ready for taking loans, just know yourself - personally the idea of taking out 30k in loans for school gave me WAY too much anxiety, and I was already riding on decent scholarships, it just didn't seem sensible to be stretched thin over a full-time college schedule, having to work to live and eat, and knowing I am already in debt.

If you're not in school or working look into seasonal jobs, gtfo of your geography and your brain for a few months and save up some money but more importantly, grow your mind and perception.

This issue isn't engineering or """software engineering."""
The issue is that the 2008 recession kickstarted a massive migration towards STEM and continued exploding education costs. Now people are paying 40-100k to get a degree in something they hate just to get a job that could've been done by someone with a high school education thirty years ago, and that money could've 3xed if it was in the markets.
There is no solution within the current American system. Title inflation and credential creep are only going to get worse. Yes, quitting is a solution but the better solution rhymes with evolution and starts with r.

Its basically going to go down like this:
1. Company implements WFH.
2. Being the savvy little saver you are, you move to a lower CoL area.
3. Company then brings in policy to adjust salary based on location.
4. You get salty but stay anyway because its comfy.
5. Now that the company is comfy with WFH, they start outsourcing to lower CoL countries.
6. You get fired because they can hire 5 Africans that can do the same quality of work at 1/5 the price.

keep at it anon - controls and ladder logic shit isn't taught in college and employers understand that. just keep applying and show initiative. I don't know what you do and don't know about the industry so I apologize if I talk you down, just trying to help. in the controls space companies tend to be either:

a) end user. think your power plant, chemical plant, pharma companies. they own and operate the factories
b) system integrators. these guys are the consultants/hired guns that will do both big and small jobs for end users. You learn the most at these places as a lot of times they are both industry agnostic and platform agnostic
c) OEM companies. these guys churn out like 1 or 2 of a very specific thing over and over (e.g. a burner system). they sell that unit as a package deal. so you're kinda working on the same thing over and over and tweaking it a little.

look at Systems integrators around your area. go to https://www.csiaexchange.com/ and just start shotgun emailing and cold calling folks "I have XYZ background and I'm interested in getting my foot in the door". good luck, if it's your kinda thing, it's a lot of fun. Well... when I opened my first business, I did it with nothing but enough money to cover my first and last month of rent on a warehouse and my tools which I had acquired over a decade of being a mechanic. I lived in a 7x10 office with no air conditioning and ate on maybe $1-2 per day. I took showers in a gym... sold virtually everything I owned to get into this situation and slowly built myself a safety net before the owner of the building foreclosed on it and the bank wouldn’t sell it to me. I fell $30,000 into the hole and had to go back to dealership life to climb back out of debt.. worked my way up to a Mercedes, Bentley and Rolls Royce dealership where I found an angel investor to fund another shop venture... it was much like the first, I lived like I was in dire poverty but I was putting away a lot of money. I thought myself 3D modeling and put together a side hustle manufacturing improved parts for the vehicles I specialized in. That was the started of my engineering firm. It was uphill from there until I decided to close the main shop due to my investor trying to control the direction of the business to suit the needs of one of his other businesses, preventing me from making more money. I lived with my parents for two years between 29 and 31 and used the time to develop new products and revamp the business with overseas manufacturing at higher volume.. eventually started doing consulting work and ended up landing a day job in Engineering with Northrop Grumman. I switched to another supplier and moved to the beach just before the pandemic.

Very based, if anyone remembers I'm that idiot who posted is resume a week or two ago asking for advice on updating it.

Im moving into controls either for aerospace or materials and I cant wait. Most people here who are denigrating engineering here are half right. Ill break it down a bit:

1. More than half of graduating engineers do not work in engineering. Yes most sectors of engineering are awash with too many grads. It is what it is.

2. Most people should not become engineers, and are not cut out of it. Stick to finance and marketing. In the end, it is all technique, though as someone who doesnt think critically about technology or modern life, you wouldn't recognize parallels between different fields.

3. The war being waged at the moment is who will hold the reigns of "progress". On one hand the direction neoliberal finance and economic interests have been guiding us, on the other technocrats and the STEM community (i.e. silicon valley). I believe I know who the victors will be. This has been going on for a long time, longer than the public knows. Anyone in engineering and science who is unaware of this needs to become aware of whats in motion here, it is not just having fun and building things. You have chosen a side. Read Norbert Weiner and Claude Shannon.

4. Let programming be done by the foreign code monkeys, it all serves the same purpose. Blood for the blood god. It is in fact a trade in most circumstances.

I went a bit off topic here, but the very reason your profession still exists as it does now likely rests upon engineering. Race does not matter in the long run, only efficiency, and it will continuously improve. This is what you asked for.

interesting & true, albeit maybe sad. sometimes I reflect on the whole thing, and what I see is just continual data collection / monetization / technologification / bureaucratization - in all aspects of life. the world is continually 'disenchanted' via the hard sciences, and the applied sciences (e.g. engineering) are used as a means to manipulate the physical world and make a buck. sure, Pinker would say we're better off than we were 500 years ago, but something dark that I can't quite put my finger on comes out of all of this.

I am a Chemical Engineer with a PhD in Biochemical engineering working at a Big Pharma.

Engineering can be very rewarding, specially knowing how reality works. Having an idea what it takes to create stuff, how energy and matter interact is fascinating. And then realizing we are just at the iceberg tip of our knowledge

If you are doing it for the money only, it is a bad decision. But that applies for mostly everything.

Go outside and get some air and sun, biz skews your world view. Engineers are well respected in all societies.

To keep it simple and reference a towering book you mentioned, everyone but the select few who truly lead all breakout efforts in technique are concious of the "Why". I think Ellul presents this well enough, where previously, engineering was done with purpose, socially, and with the consensus of the larger cultural ethos of wherever it emerged from. That is not the case today. Simply look around you, even those of you in engineering or the sciences, and ask your self do you know how the majority of things around you work? Would a learned priest of the 13th century have the same trouble? Would a khmer farmer have trouble using each tool in his shed, and teaching his son how to use them?

In short, his theory implies that all media interpreted as information can be unified into a single language, signal and medium. I plays into the universalization and "enforcement of standards" across the world. Globalism is nothing to do with mixing of the races, or destruction of the economy. It is simply the next, fated, logical step in the system, which seems to perpetuate itself at all levels. Leaders are no longer in control, technique is.

I was thinking about studying software engineering, but doing 9 hours of typing bullshit on a PC for the rest of my life sounds like hell to me. And network shit is just plain boring to me. My other options were Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and I can't even get motivated enough to fill up the college forms for the transfer.

I already did a year of Psychology, but quit because it's boring as fuck and full of bullshit.

My family has been pressuring me to go back to college after I lost my job at McDonald's thanks to Corona. Seriously. I had a nervous breakdown from all the family pressure and discussions and was sent to a psychiatrist.

Her only advice was "suck it up, grind an engineering degree for 4 years and find a stable job making middle-class money."

If you are in the West most wagies are low IQ mouth breathers and think they are smarter than engineers... and maybe some are as the quality of what makes an engineer is so fucking low. Also, it's easy to beleive you are smarter than an engineer when you get paid twice as much as they do and you don't even know how to do basic math and make bank gardening even though you don't know what the differnce is between a tree and a shrub. If you'd like my advice, stop caring for what your family expects of you. They're concerning themselves with surface-level appearances, you're concerned with self-fulfillment and happiness.

I'd normally advice anyone with the brains to get an engineering degree, as a lot of the jobs are easy if you look for them. Then you'll have plenty of leisure time to do things you actually want to do. If you want to be a musician, I'd suggest electrical engineering.

However, if you don't want to be an engineer, just don't. Go find that thing that allows you to achieve those goals of yours. Hell, start a snow cone stand and then you can familiarize yourself with running a business - you can practice your musical craft while the line is gone and even probably do a stupid gimmick with a ukulele for extra tips. Think Amazon based online selling. Inside sales tools are rapidly developing and are able to handle that side as well. The demand for these roles is already beginning to decline. Should saturate in 10-15 years. With respect to engineering management type roles, those are already beginning to be outsourced. I see it across all of my customers across my region. Shit is bad. I think the thing is that bachelors degrees are mostly useless. Youre better off just working right out of school or doing the 6-8 years at a (good) business, med, or law school. Im finishing a finance degree right now because Im already 3/4ths done but I dont have any desire to go get my MBA so I am regretting it.

No those are going too. And why wouldn’t they? This goes back to my comment about status that many autists simply will never understand but OP nails it at the top. Think about how people that matter think about engineers. They are expendable. Doesn’t matter who and doesn’t matter where. Doesn’t matter if you have clearance. Your job is going to Chang or Pajeet, unless you are willing to take lower pay. And what are you, the autist with no real network, sway, or negotiation skills, going to do about it?

You what? Go to any engineering career fair and it will be fucking DOMINATED by defense contractors who can only hire American citizens. Boeing, Northrop, Lockheed, Raytheon, General Dynamics, L3, NAVSEA, etc. Engineering jobs at these companies requires a security clearance from Uncle Sam, meaning they have to treat you well because their prospect pool is smaller, especially since soft cucks don't want to make weapons.

All shit companies to work for who make like half to a third of what FAGMAN engineers make. FAGMAN engineers can retire at like 30 if they play their cards right with stocks and can get street cred in the consultancy/startup world and make millions even on failed startups.

Massive cope.

Defense contractors have to hire American engineers with 2.0 GPAs who are overall poor quality candidates, that’s why they get paid half to a third less even in a market where FAGMAN is down the street paying 2-3x more.

Defense contractors are probably the last place for engineers to actually enjoy themselves. It's where all the smart engineers work. Work at Raytheon or the like and you what, get to work 9-5, get a great pay for your hours, and you can buy a house and live a life outside sillycuck valley. Nobody gives a fuck if you vote republican or libertarian or whatever because it's a fucking defense company, unlike FAGMAN where you get 'talked to' for not putting your pronouns in your email signature.

And if a foreigner really is that good, they will make exceptions. But they probably won’t take the jobs because of the shit pay.

Sandia labs came to my uni once and said they’ll fast track foreigners even from China with PhDs in engineering to get citizenship just to hire them with the appropriate clearance.

Defense companies are notoriously PC and hire on the worst quota of all: You are an American citizen who doesn’t have a felony and you have an engineering degree from somewhere that’s ABET accredited. Those are about the only requirements.

If you graduated from MIT or the #1000 school that happens to be ABET accredited they view it the same.

Defense companies regularly diversity hire as much as the government does because that’s where all their money comes from. A company like Google is majority Asian because that’s who works the craziest and asks the least questions.

5 years into a physics PhD here...hard agree. It's just not worth it if you care about money in any way. If I had gotten a shitty job with my bachelors out of college I would have made enough cash to invest in 2017 to have /made it/ by now, instead I only had like $10k to invest back then. Going into a PhD was possibly one of the worst financial moves I ever made, not to mention how it will make you insane.

I can only talk from my experience but in the UK engineering is such a regulated profession that you need a master's (4 year degree), plus ((experience)) such as an internship to even get invited to an interview; which itself involves multiple stages, an application, a verbal presentation, sometimes a test.

All this for a salary somewhere in the £20k region. Or lower still if you fell for the STEM ambassador's lies and did civil engineering like I did.

One of the major competencies is verbal communication and social skills which at least keeps out much of the foreign "cheap" labour but does make it less appealing to the autists like me who was drawn to engineering by the technical side of things.

I thought civil was where the money's at?

I'd say engineering is fairly respected in the UK, it's not a protected term so a boiler technician can be called an engineer, but an there are obviously differences between that and someone educated at uni.
I agree it's tough, but there's lots of other shit that faggots in the UK study at uni just to work as a barista.
There's less money in it here than in the US or Germany tho
