>Joke of the day
AMD shorts getting BTFO

>> No.293168

>Shorts
Can someone explain this?

If you hold a stock for less than 3 days, are you considered 'shorting' it? Longer than 3 days and you're considered 'long' for a stock?

If
>AMD shorts getting BTFO
Doesn't that mean those traders will just turn into 'longs' until AMD goes back up? (If they don't sell of course)

>> No.293171

>>293168
When we say "shorts" we mean this http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/shortselling.asp

People that hold the stock less than 3 days are considered "traders" since they don't care about the company and are mostly concerned with scalping money during periods of volatility.

"Investors" are people that hold long term.

>> No.293180

>>293168
One more question regarding tax.

So say all year you bought $GOOG and made $5,000 for the year in stocks after selling it. But let's say you also bought a couple failed penny stocks and ended up losing $6,000 on them throughout the year.

So your total for the year of stocks is -$1,000. Do you still have to pay taxes at the end of the year on the $5,000 you made, or is that thrown out since you lost overall more than you gained?

>>293171
Thanks, I think. So 3 days is the golden rule? 'Shorts' = 3 day 'traders', 'Longs' = week+ 'investors'?

I appreciate the insight for my questions. Still learning so much.

>>293180
>Do you still have to pay taxes at the end of the year on the $5,000 you made
No, your trading account (mines Scottrade) will give you a form to import when you file taxes. It takes the total gains/losses.

Shorts = Short sellers

Traders = Short term holders

Investors = Long term holdings

You should have sold a long time ago.

When a stock you own and bought at a high price starts falling, you think "it will go back up". Then you wait, and you lose more money. At this point you get into a mode where you're thinking "I lost too much money, I have to wait for it to go back up". Yet again it keeps falling, and you just keep losing money until you're completely fucked. Sometimes a stock will _never_ go back to the price you bought it at, and the longer you wait for it to crash the more and more money you keep losing.

Not being able to cut your losses at a reasonable time will kill you in the stock market.

As of what you should do at this point, well, at %40 you're fucked good, it might turn into %80 loss though, and it might never go back up to even %40, or it might take several months or years. However this is some penny stock you were buying, these companies are not exactly reliable whatsoever, there's a much higher chance this shit will crash for good rather than if it was a big name corporation.

Personally I would have sold a long time ago, and if I were you I would still sell it.

I just bought a mine in Africa (politically stable region). They mined a good amount of the first layer, which was mostly gold, in the past two years and now have been selling the gold and paying cash to the owners. Now they will be advancing into the second layer which is full of copper. $1.2bn copper reserve, and will be pulling out (estimated) $368.4mm of copper in 2014. I hear ya. I bought in on a large dip, but didn't expect this to happen. The walmart deal alone will bring the stock up really high, but in the short term this thing is getting slaughtered. If you're holding for the long-term it'll be fine. Tons of profitable deals are made and will continue to be made, the profits will come.

Start by comparing fundamentals of companies that you personally know to other companies in the industry to get a feel for how the industry is valued. Read industry journals and trade reports. Use your knowledge of things outsiders aren't aware of and buy when you think the stocks are undervalued and sell when they are expensive. It's easier to get information first if you know where to look.

Is it worth investing in land that's in poor areas? Rural/Detroit/etc? I'm looking in areas of Idaho and Wyoming.

I have the money to buy a small amount of acreage, but don't know anything about property investing.

lol, if anything you're just going to get swindled

the finance business is all about connections and knowing people.

value isn't assigned by the market, most of the time it's arbitrary.

>media report: OHH LOOK AT *INSERT AREA* THE PROPERTIES ARE SKYROCKETING!! BUY NOW!! BIG VALUE!!
in reality it's just rich people telling the media to advertise a specific area so they can sell their houses or properties or land for over the market prices to clueless first home buyers or whatever.

Not really. Lots of that land has ton of back taxes owed plus you need to pay property tax. If you want to know about investing in land. Create a thread and I'll post in it with my findings here in Texas.

Assuming they don't continue with taper?

>>307138
Actually you can follow property value pretty easily. Also knowing people in city planning helps. Especially if you buy property in an area soon to be acquired by the government for highway expansions. This is what rich people do because we know the common man doesn't have the funds to buy our land.

CUR is a bit of gamble. Without having to move to /sci/, I'll say that their therapeutic approach is rather rare (though it might become more common as we finally move away from the anti-stem cell legislation). I don't expect any huge gains in the near future (about a year) since they just started Pre-clinical and Phase I clinical trials for most of their "products" (which are easy to "pass"). The Phase II trials for their main product just started a few months ago, so I don't expect those results until around 2015.

GERN used to do similar research, but stopped after it was becoming too expensive. BTX bought the rights to continue the research, but so far nothing has come out of it. I haven't seen anything particularly exciting in academia or in related companies (e.g. ACTC). I won't put in a sizable amount in until I see results from any of these labs, which will likely predict the efficacy of the other approaches.

Plug isn't dead. From the walmart deal alone they will be profitable and will have a double digit stock price. That is from 1 deal, they have made more this year and recently got a deal with Hyundai which will possibly be a joint venture. They issued more shares to increase capital to continue more ventures. It sucks in the short term, but in the long term patient investors will be rewarded.

The fixed costs are too high. I read it somewhere, but can't remember where. I know if you have a stocktwits account you can check out Michael Bigger. He's been investing in Plug for years and is a very successful investor. He posts little insights and the occasional article that makes it clear how Plug will be a winner, not in the short term, but in the long term. He's also been promoting APP for a long time and it's had an amazing turnaround. The VP at Plug is presenting at a conference today so hopefully more good news will come.
Also to note one stupid thing about this company is everyone is expecting them to provide batteries for cars and are always mad when they don't announce it. They never said they would make cars but people assume they will which is why they're always being compared to Tesla. They make forklift batteries, not car batteries, yet. Who knows down the road they may.
