The best way to understand crypto is to compare it to Napster, BitTorrent etc.

Napster let you download files from other people’s computers instead of from a server that can be shut down, making piracy easy to get away with.

Blockchain similarly lets you create apps where the data exists on people’s computers, allowing you to do things like create currencies and securities that aren’t easy to shut down.

The result is a handful of legit uses such as cheap international remittance, but the vast majority of crypto is just people selling assets that would be shut down under normal circumstances, but aren’t because it’s too decentralized to police.
