basically, if you have for example 500 algos for 2 years the nodes will still give you rewards, but based on those 500 algos
if at the first year you sent a transaction, any of those (includes receiving transactions i think, but a 0 algo transaction also works), then the nodes update the base value on which they compute the rewards (in short, it compounds)

I don't know of any way to check, but if the math doesn't add up, they're ripping you off. You shouldn't have to perform any transactions to get rewards, unless you want your rewards to compound daily.

You might want to look at a hardware wallet like Ledger if you're concerned about security. If you're tech savvy, you can install the command line version of Algorand and create and store a wallet and your algos on your local computer, which is what I do.
