Lets use one share as an example. Having a short position means that they paid someone to borrow a share. Thinking that the price will fall, they sell the share, hoping that when it comes time to return it, they can buy it for less than they sold and make a profit.

If the squeeze happens, the hedge funds will get margin called and forced to buy the shares now to close their short position. Once the guy who originally lent the share gets it returned, he'll very likely sell it (possibly waiting a bit to let the price rise more). If the hedge funds rebuy this share, they can use it again to close a different short position. This cycle can of course continue again and again, the same share being reused to close multiple positions. In theory short positions could be closed with only one share (though obviously this would take an exorbitant amount of time and kill them with the premiums).

The GME holdings within that ETF equated to their normal ~1% before the run up. After the price increased it became a larger percentage simply because the value went up. It's a blue herring put forth by $300+ bagholders trying to reduce their losses by dragging more suckers in with pretend DD.

I think that Revolut own your stock where on Degiro it is you who owns your shares. That's why Revolut offers the purchase of fractional shares and Degiro not.
On Degiro it is better to create a Custody account to prevent Degiro from lending 30% of your shares to ... let's say Citadel.
