Why are my BTC transactions unconfimed for 3+ hours

I decided to move my BTC from core to an exchange about 3 hours back, still no confirmation. This is really disturbing; I don't want my precious BTC to be out in the wilderness during the form. am I fucked ?

which exchange? lots of people want to get BTC out of exchanges for aug1, so they're probably being overloaded with withdrawals and have emptied hotwallets
bitfinex for example has a 12 hrs upper limit on commiting withdrawals

Do you have to manually make sure that there are enough left on the account for the withdrawal fee?

I've never really thought about it before since I've never withdrawn all my coins at once... Fucking poloniex.
