This is my rudimentary understanding, so I might be wrong. But, selling calls/puts is different from buying them. When you buy options, all you risk losing is the premium fee. Selling options is where you are actually borrowing shares to sell them, with the belief that the price isn't going to actually go up (in the case of selling a call) or go down (in the case of selling a put) to the point where the contracts you sold can be exercised. When you sell options, you're exposed to a lot more risk. For instance, this guy could have sold a bunch of puts at $400, thinking the price would keep going up. Now that it tanked to like $40, for every contract he sold, he's liable to buy back 100 shares for $400 each.
