28585374 No.28585374 [Reply] [Original]

Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized p2p privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT (hidden tx amounts) ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a Monero user willingly providing a view key for a specific transaction.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of txs increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in May 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

Hey Chads, need some advice. I'm currently at 60%BTC, 40%XMR and consider to rebalance my portfolio to 40%BTC 60%XMR. I'll keep stacking XMR so in the summer I'd be at 25%/75% hopefully.

Is that a good idea? Does DCA apply to BTC/XMR exchange as well is that only for fiat? I'm still a bit salty/biased because I sold some of my BTC for XMR last October.

>Privacy in blockchain and crypto is a major concern for users, study reveals

"73% of respondents have either hesitated or completely avoided making a transaction in the past because they were worried about the privacy implications around those transactions (e.g., their wallet address would be revealed and linked to their identities)."

"Respondents disagree that wallet addresses provide enough privacy. One user provided a personal example: “My friend made a lot of money in DeFi. He asked me to guess how much he made. I told him the exact number; he was shocked. It was because he transferred ETH to me before.”"

I downloaded the full node on my SSD and moved it on an HDD. Now I just run the monerd-daemon in the background and it automatically syncs the blockchain whenever there is new stuff. Only downloading it initially is really slow. After that you can keep it on a HDD and shouldn't be a problem afaik. Correct me if I'm wrong plxs

Atomic swaps are not needed now, because you can freely trade on Binance and other big exchanges.

If some government bans their exchanges (registered and centralized business subject to regulation) from trading XMR, the best alternative is on-chain atomic swaps.

Doing it with some off-chain contract is possible, as is with wrapping, as you only have to trust REN for the duration of the contract, but not optimal.
The world trusts the Bitcoin chain and the Monero chain already. Why add a third party?

They're quite different.

Bisq is usually used with fiat money (USD, EUR,...) on one side, crypto on the other. The part using fiat is usually disclosed to the seller and starts from a Know-Your-Customer audited source (wiretranser, sepa = bank, visa, paypal, moneytransfers...).
It requires a third party escrow to block and refund the transaction if one party doesn't come through.

Atomic swaps are trustless and on-chain based on partial hashes. No third party, you only have to trust the chain of your coins. You don't have to disclose anything other than the public address.
https://academy.binance.com/en/glossary/atomic-swap
They doesn't work with fiat money because you don't have a crypto wallet for it. You could always use some stablecoin, but at the moment BTC is considered the preferred counterpart by the Monero community.

You can convert coins in many ways, including chatting and sharing keys on telegram.
Bisq is a lot like telegram in that is trust based and off-chain exchange.
Atomic swaps are more like using your own private wallet.

Monero's dynamic block size means the block size will get bigger if there are more transactions. There will be no fee market like with Bitcoin.
>>28609521
>>28609949
check out this write up on reddit. The post was made 6 months ago so transaction size has gone up, but it demonstrates how dynamic fees work:
Currently, Monero's median block size is for simplicity roughly 30kB and we have 0.1 tps over the day, dynamic block size & fee kick in only above 300kB, so up to 1.0 tps fees stay the same (they fall a bit every block with the block reward, but that's not relevant here).
If we had 50 tps, block size without any further optimisation would be around 15,000kB and the formula for the base fee (only valid above 300kB median) is something like this:
base_fee = block_reward * min_block_weight / median_block_weight
So after dynamic block size settled at 15,000kB, fees would shrink 1/50 of current fees.
These are very simplified estimations, not counting in protocol improvements like the coming CLSAG signature scheme which will cut tx sizes by ~25% which will lower fees directly, without hitting the dynamic block size, but then accordingly 50 tps would have 25% less weight which would be 11,250kB and dynamic fee would be roughly 1/37 of the base fee.

I’ve known about crypto for years but only really looked into it recently. Monero is one of the only projects out there that I can really get behind. Of course it starts pumping right before I buy but my plan is to buy often and to hold it for years and see what happens.

desu I think monero climbing is actually a sign of an imminent collapse, its climbing as people start using it to bail out of the market

Do you know how i know this will go bigger? Monero is actually legit untraceable. The companies that can take all your info from a locked iPhone, the guys that can trace every bitcoin transaction? The Israeli cunts that work with every police in the world? They literally admitted to me last week that they could not track Monero and were still working on it. This is a criminals wet dream coin. I’d known this for a long time, but ever since the Jews at Cellebrite admitted it, i knew it was the real deal. Im bummed i never got into it, you fuckers are lucky.

people keep saying this, but if that's true that just means those people are retarded because that doesn't work for dodging taxes. At least in the US, crypto to crypto is a taxable event so you would want to buy xmr BEFORE you make any gains. I don't think people who have enough money to move the price are so retarded that they don't understand how taxes work, so I think this is just a recovery from the collapse on the ratio.

I've got the opposite problem. Found a saved file with a seed in it just called "wallet password". No idea what coin and what wallet though lol. I do almost everything on the exchange though because YOLO, so its probably empty. But who knows, maybe I left a bit of a hedge behind.... back in 2014

This. It's not a $100 difference between what you paid and what you could have paid, the percentage spread is always there. That kind of "little difference" could mean the decision between retiring and not retiring.
