I'm sure the equation that smooths it all out is perfectly elegant, but it's a serious error. Monero won't naturally explode in the same way Bitcoin did/does, which is very bad for its long term survival.

https://youtu.be/aC9Uu5BUxIISomeone shared this with me in the last Monero general. It convinced me to buy 250 XMR and to slowly accumulate more over the next couple of years so thank you guys for posting this.I'm not concerned about short-term stagnation of the price just like I wasn't with BTC in 2014, ETH in 2015 and Chainlink in 2017. The only time this mindset bit me in the ass was with Request Network.I'm currently testing out different wallets and using my personal server as a Monero node to connect other light wallets to. I really like how GUI wallet has a miner integrated straight into the wallet itself. I think I will shift some of the excess CPU cycles of my (GPU) mining rigs to Monero, I don't think it's profitable but I really like the idea of incentivizing decentralized mining to not have the blockchain fall in Chinese hands like what sadly happened to bitcoin.

It's a coin meant to be actually used. If you don't think you will use XMR to buy privacy sensitive stuff then don't buy it.Monero is what bitcoin originally intended to be. An actual currency. It's not digital gold or meant to be held and then sold on for a profit in the future.

>>28396659The price stabilization is the miners who turn on to keep price stabilization. There are a lot of ghost CPU mining farms out there.XMR price wise will be equivalent to LTC unless there is a big crackdown on public blockchains.
>>28396659>People buy it to buy drugsThis is the reason why Monero is successful. People actually use it to buy stuff like what people used bitcoin for between 2010-2015.Remember when you could buy steam games with bitcoin officially sanctioned by Valve. Entire black markets sprouting out of the ground on TOR where you could buy stuff with BTC. Yeah now in 2021 there is only really one real currency, Monero. Want to buy drugs? Well you'll have to use XMR. Want to stay truly private when buying a VPN or other privacy centric stuff that can't be traced back to you? You have to use XMR.It's meant to be used, to be exchanged for goods and services. It's not meant to be speculative. Go buy BTC as digital gold if you're looking for that.

>>28396679Nothing wrong with ETFs they provide stability for your long-term portfolio>>28396866XMR isn't going to moon any time soon. It wasn't designed to do that. Instead it's going to slowly increase in value as more and more of the actual cryptocurrency transactions start being conducted in Monero. You shouldn't judge it based on valuation but based on amount of transactions per second. It has steadily grown since 2016, even during the cryptocrash because Monero was actually used by people to buy stuff. BTC transactions stagnated long ago and ETH and basically every other altcoin has transactions that correlate with boom and busts. Suggesting they are trade transactions based on speculation, not utility. How many people use Dapps right now? It might be big in the future but right now the ETH is used for speculative purposes. How many people use Bitcoin right now? The cost of transactions are so prohibitively expensive that it's being touted as a store of value instead of being a COIN like its name is suggesting.Monero however. Most people don't even speculate on it due to its price not being volatile enough in the short term to play casino with. The transactions are primarily actual usage of it as a currency. It's something you either have to buy now and hold for a decade. Or you buy it now to quickly purchase something that needs absolute privacy. It's not a short term gamble. Sell your XMR if you want to see a quick 10x. BTC and ETH even at their current price hold far more potential for speculation.
>>28397034Bitcoin is digital real estate. Bitcoin isn’t fungible. Monero is digital gold.
Nobody's responding to my thread so I may as well ask here. Is XMR a good entry point for mining? Or should I just go for ETH(or something completely different)? From what I've read, XMR can be mined with the CPU, so there's no need for the expensive GPUs.
>>28397773I mine XMR on CPU, ETH on GPUETH is more profitable, but nobody can predict how long this is going to last with proof of stake etc, etcalso hardware prices are inflated as fuck
>>28397773Yes it would be a good entry point but the profits will not be that crazy, any mining profits aren't really that crazy unless you're a Chinese farmer guy, and XMR like another anon pointed out in this thread is a great project to be mining for because you will be helping keep it decentralized

>>28398069That's really cool and I'm jealous. Yes, why not start mining XMR if you don't want to shell out for an insanely expensive GPU, you can get some pretty nice CPU's too for decent price.
>>28389773>buy 150$ stablecoins plz
>>28397212>Can you give me a tldr? No, watch it or not. Simplification won't help you here.>I'm sympathetic towards moneroYou shouldn't be. Philosophy is great and all but historical performance and data analysis is key. Monero is used as the defacto currency in the dark web for a reason, it's really the best untraceable currency out there. There's a reason it's the only currency triple character agencies put a bounty on.>but I don't see adoptionIt's currently the only choice dark web merchants give you. I'd argue it's the only coin that has any actual adoption after merchants dropped BTC one by one over time>I don't think it will look nice in the upcoming BTC crash, so why not buy later? This one is a little more complex but that is indeed why I didn't go all-in on XMR but decided to buy some right now and slowly increase my stake over the next ~5 years. The reason why I decided to buy some right now instead of wait was because it's unclear what will trigger the oncoming BTC crash and how it crashes affects XMR. For example if BTC crashes due to tax season, regulation of any kind or lack of utility then it will lead to a valuation increase of XMR.If BTC crashes because the gravy train runs out and someone drops BTC like back in december 2017 then XMR will suffer as well (but not in usage, only valuation). This would mean your initial investment backfired but you can accumulate more in the coming years. The reason the price is kinda stagnant right now is because speculators don't know what to think of XMR. On one hand do you consider the fact that the DOJ has a 600K bounty and it being banned in some countries as a good thing? (it truly poses a threat to the establishment and monetary system) or do you consider it a bad thing? (Less ramp up for the common person to bother purchasing it, less speculation, more utility focus). That is a bet you should take yourself. I spread my risk by buying some right now and accumulating over the next 5 years.
>>28397212>but I don't see adoptionNot only what >>28398336 said, but also https://www.getmonero.org/community/merchants/And, if you try to look anything up and add [crypto] to your search, I am never really disappointed by the amount of shops that accept XMR online, but I guess it depends what you're looking for. Also, if a shop accepts crypto, but doesn't have XMR listed, CONTACT THEM! I've done this multiple times and they've sent an XMR address to my email and completed my order, if someone is into cryptocurrency and accepts it for their business, it isn't hard for them to setup an XMR wallet especially because its an OG and not a shitcoin, this is just my experience.
>>28397553I disagree with Monero being digital gold. It's going to be used as a currency due to the transaction costs going down over time. BTC only became gold because the cost of transaction is very high just like with physical gold. If BTC had low transaction costs it would probably be used more to buy normal goods all over the place already. But in reality it's just a vehicle and store of value while every BTC holder converts to USD when they want to buy something with actual value.>>28397773ETH is still profitable to mine with GPUs. Monero isn't really profitable unless you factor in future valuation gain of Monero. However if you're already mining ETH with GPUs then the CPU that is staying mostly idle could be mining Monero at the same time so it gives a little bit extra income. It most likely will be break-even but you're supporting the Monero ecosystem and it might gain in valuation in the long-term.

>>28396659>dealers sell it for BTCi can guarantee you that in at least one case this is completely false
>>28399113Gold isn't really fungible the value of gold differs based on source. There's a reason why gold with a certificate is worth more than gold without a certificate.Gold can be used as a transfer of value just like everything in life. The reason gold isn't used as a transfer of value is because the transaction cost of using gold is too high for little to no gain over using low-cost alternatives like fiat.XMR is going to keep being used as a currency perpetually but the amount of XMR being exchanges just drops lower as the valuation rises. So in 10 years time the dark web will still be exchanging XMR but you'll just buy your substance for 0.002 XMR instead of 0.2XMR.

That's breaking the law as well, whether you agree with it or not, just the facts of life.Black markets, tax evasion, money laundering to be exact. In most countries it is so, actually. And careful when you say "the goverment", there are over 200 "governments" on this planet, so I'm not sure which one it is that you're referring to. Not all of them need to obey the same rules you are assuming to be solid. Many can outlaw whatever it is that they want to outlaw, be it an exchange or an asset, like a cryptocurrency.
>>28407989A cryptocurrency actually having a usecase and actually being used to such a degree that governments are getting scared of it is hardly one of the worst thing to happen to a cryptoproject. You're correct however assessing that it's a legitimate risk and uncertainty. In fact I am sure it's the main reason XMR hasn't mooned as hard yet. People are uncertain about its place in the world. Is it going to go down the dark path or will it be allowed.
>>28407857>You fallacy is assuming the demand will remain the same as people might begin panic selling around the globe.Fallacy? I'm not assuming anything, I'm observing the lessons of history, specifically the Prohibition: if people *really* want or need something they'll pay through the nose to acquire it, regardless of its legal status. And if XMR gets banned it'll be for being TOO effective, which if anything would actually encourage more adoption by criminal elements.
The whole idea of cryptocurrency was to avoid centralized and government systems. Monero is one of the very few who can really do it
>>28407038you sound like the nocoiners from the early years of btc, you know that tax evasion is already illegal right? so there's no need to make additional laws, they'll just audit the people who they suspect of tax evasion.

>>28393597Halvening guarantees that the mining community is in uproar every couple of years and it's not even sure that mining BTC will stay profitable after every halvening. If it stops being profitable will for-profit miners keep mining BTC?Meanwhile Monero specifically restricted ASIC and GPU mining so that the miners would be decentralized on purpose to prevent for-profit mining to become the standard vs community mining.Last but not least the block rewards will eventually stop for BTC making mining completely unviable in 2140. After 2140 BTC basically stops existing. XMR recognized this and after all standard block rewards are mined it will permanently award 0.6XMR for every block in perpetuity to ensure there will always be miners in the future so that the currency keeps existing.Sure 2140 is a long time away but people are going to anticipate that when investing as people invest into cryptocurrency for its long term valuation. Monero is actually used, will kept being mined permanently, is truly decentralized due to being CPU mining based, Has an opaque public ledger, is untraceable and truly private (as government agencies have proven with bounties trying to take Monero down, which they didn't succeed at so far, raising the bounty higher and higher as they panick).
>>28416489I actually shouldn't complain.. I bought monero back when it was around 12 bucks and still hold an unknown amount. It just sucks a bit watching it slip down the rankings. Fundamentally its rock solid but fundamentals aren't worth much in clown world. My comment was more bitterness than snark
>>28417282kraken, binance
Can you guys give me some hopium :( Feeling some pain starting at the btc chart right now
>>28416784>Digibyte was supposed to hit 10k last year according to the ExpertsNot all "experts" are created equal. And not all predictions are founded in good reasoning. The Satis Group projection might be off on their ballpark timeline but their estimation that criminal adoption will be the primary driver of XMR price in future is spot-on, which suggests they'll be right in the long-run.As mentioned, black markets, tax evasion and money laundering are the Big 3 fin-crime sectors Monero is set to dominate. As long as it continues being the best privacy protocol around it will prove a very lucrative investment with time.

Probably what I'm most worried about is the worst of both worlds... XMR goes to a million dollars but it's way too hot to get rid of. So I end up with the crypto equivalent of a giant bag of cocaine under the bed. Sure the government cant track it but how would I ever find a legit buyer
>>28418940I'm just a noob but afaik atomic swaps would solve this. Correct me if I'm wrong
>>28417822Do you know what is the best coin to buy to trade for monero? Binance doesn t let me buy xmr directly

Sure the government cant track it but how would I ever find a legit buyerYou'd just gradually atomically swap it into BTC/LTC/whatever in smaller increments and cash out on any exchange.
>>28419353Localmonero wouldn't be an option surely if the govt decided to make XMR illegal to hold or trade
>>28419458>You'd just gradually atomically swap it into BTC/LTC/whatever in smaller increments and cash out on any exchange. All vendors in the future will give discount for purchased in XMR. No need to convert to btc. wink winkn

>>28419423> Sure the government cant track it but how would I ever find a legit buyerspend it, don't go through fiat. People won't be moving to and from fiat, they will stay in crypto. This is when monero takes over

I'm gonna be dead by that point and the fact that XMR is not gonna have big value like BTC or ETH is a big concern. Investing in index funds sounds way more reasonable than XMR.

>>28421705He's saying that at 2020-08-08 prices (barely $100 per xmr), one millionth (barely 34 xmr) of the 2120 total xmr supply (barely 34 million xmr) would be $3120.
>>28423752(and the point is that talk about Monero's inflation doesn't hold much weight because even a hundred years from now the supply wouldn't be too big: an investor with a fairly modest amount of money could secure a millionth of the 2120 supply even today)
Are any of the older obsolete mining rigs able to mine Monero? I know devs took some steps a few years ago to keep ASICs out of Monero.
>>28418940monero's price is based off it's utility, unlike other speculative shitcoins. it would be nowhere near $1,000,000 if it were hard to get rid of. that is, excluding the potential of your local government being tyrannical and fucking you over, though that wouldn't be a problem for the network
>>28425115Today mining is only profitable on CPUs.Ryzen CPUs offer the highest efficiency.

>>28393597>Without massive volatility, you also can't have massive growth.>You NEED the volatility>it's a serious error. Monero won't naturally explode in the same way Bitcoin did/does, which is very bad for its long term survival.okay you've said it's bad multiple times - now can you explain why? Furthermore, see the data in this image: >>28426724it seems to me not only is it cheaper to have privacy, more and more people are actually using monero relative to bitcoin. so again, can you elaborate on why such a predictable all-at-once halving is required as opposed to a predictable tail-emission?
>>28396499Definitely. Xmr is what I feel most safe in. I actually sold most of my btc and bought monero recently. I think it’s good to have some other top coins but I don’t believe in the other projects the same way I do with monero

>>28405778It’s actually called xmrig https://github.com/xmrig/xmrigAlso it’s best to use a smaller pool instead of one of the larger ones. Smaller pools help distribute the hash rates and decentralize the network instead of concentrating them.

>>28430452>Would you be willing to purchase something small with monero if you could risk getting arrested? That means you could only purchase things off the dark web. Actually, it would be cool to buy normal legal items off the dark web as a way to evade government tyranny.people are willing to purchase small amounts of illegal things with fiat currencies all across the globe with the risk of getting arrested. when a heroin dealer gets busted with 10k cash, the USD is not criticized. when a bank(exchange) is robbed, the USD is not criticized, the bank's security policies are. monero is true, free, sound money. you can either sell to grayscale or buy from them next year. up to you.
>>28418940The point is you never sell it you just buy everything with XMR including your house and car so that they can avoid paying taxes as well.
>>28431357Yeah, makes sense I guess. Just trying to imagine very clearly how things would work and what the world would look like. For example: meet someone on Craigslist to buy gym equipment, and then you say hey, how about I send you some of this illegal crypto currency instead of fiat? Yeah it’s a dumb example but just trying to visualize how interactions would take place. I’m sure I’m not looking at this with the full picture. Also no need to convince me on monero, been a supporter for a long time, it’s my largest hold and comfiest coin. I justdoubled my stack recently too and I mine to support the network.

>>28420555>linkbabby's first bull run
>>28421705You're either an expert level troll that is very believable or a midwit. The $3100 was to show how little impact inflation would have in XMR if divided the current market cap over all coins in existence in 2120. In 2120 1/1,000,000th of XMR would be $3100 at current prices. Showing that inflation would barely impact valuation but would still result in miners always mining monero for financial gain which keeps the coin viable forever unlike BTC which by definition stops being a thing after 2140 and maybe even earlier when halvening makes mining unprofitable.
