When people say this, I just don't really understand their thought process, sure they COULD have shorted at 300, but that would have forced the price down if they did it in the quantity you say, they would have had to do it RIGHT when it hit the peak for the amounts you claim to have been accurate, and even then, with the volume you would have to take out every other paper handed seller and other hedge funds that sold at the peak.
People like you seem to think Melvin and the other shorting hedgies exist in some sort of a bubble where no other people or players exist.

They still have to buyback their positions, which will in turn make the price go up.

Even on WSB, the general sentiment is pretty hostile against GME discussion at this point and as small as retail investors are, the mainstream hype around WSB and GME is absolutely a part of why it went as high as it did. That's part of the catalyst for what happened two weeks ago. With sentiment changing, where is the next spike of interest coming from? It seems like people are relying on institutions trying to gut each other but I'm not seeing where that is going to come from.
