>> No.28221531

My parents bought a house for 80k in the late 80s that's worth about 1 milly now, they sold for a 20-40k profit or so I think.

If you're like 50 yo then it doesn't really count. It just means you have will have a comfy retirement. Who cares. I think my has an $800k net worth, but most of that money is in her pension savings. When you're a 70 yo old boomer it doesn't make a huge difference whether you have $10MM, $1MM or $500k. Things like having a comfy family, good friends good wife, you're healthy etc. are MUCH more important at that point in life.

Being a millionaire is really only impressive if you're in your 20s. In your 30s I'd say $2.5MM+ is impressive.

Yep, infact one of the most common professions of a millionaire is a teacher. This is because they make up a large portion of the population and have a pension. Most of these people baught some house in the 90s and now are sitting on hundreds of thousands of equity.

If you're like 50 yo then it doesn't really count. It just means you will have a comfy retirement. Who cares. Most people who don't live in third world countries will have enough money by the time they retire to live a decent life. I think my mom has an $800k net worth, but most of that money is in her pension savings. When you're a 70 yo old boomer it doesn't make a huge difference whether you have $10MM, $1MM or $500k. That's not how net worth works.
Net worth = assets + cash - liabilities

>> No.28223432

depends of the country
it's always amusing to see you americans call each other "mutts", subtly implying you're not a burger yourself, or that you're more educated than them, and then you go on to make widespread comments about "europe" as a conglomerate when there is in fact more difference between germany and france than there is between germany and the US
i.e., most of france doesn't have retirement plans as you think of them, it is mostly state pensions. and sure enough there are only 700k french millionaires, or 1 in 72 adults, compared to the 1 in 12 adults in burgerland
maybe you're tempted to say that's just the french, surely other countries have it better. to an extent the nordic countries do, but they never reach the same per capita wealth as burgerland. and there are in fact more millionaires in the united states than in all of europe combined
