UVXY tracks volatility. When the market crashes, people get scared and the price gets very volatile thus UVXY moons. UVXY tracks volatility through the purchase of VIX futures contracts. VIX futures contracts are based on the price of S&P 500 options expiring in the next 30 days. When the market dumps, options prices increase since options are in effect a form of insurance, this leads to VIX futures pumping and thus UVXY pumping. UVXY is also leveraged so it pumps extra hard.
The problem with UVXY is if the market isn't dumping, say it's crabbing, UVXY will tend to steadily dump since VIX futures are in contango. This means the closest expiring contract is less expensive than further out contracts so when the powers that run UVXY sell a close contract they have to buy a further out contract for a higher price thus losing money on the "roll". So unless you are expecting an imminent dump you shouldn't just hold UVXY. It is black magic to be used sparingly. If you get it right though it can make you rich.

MVIS's patent means you can make AR specs look like regular glasses and no one would even know. VUZI is also ahead of the pack on designing their specs to look like regular glasses.
