Besides programming, what are some of the skills that one can learn by yourself and easily monetize? Right now I'm thinking of video editing, After Effects or even stuff like Cinema4D, Blender etc, but not sure about the learning curve and how easy those skills would be to monetize or if market is already oversaturated by people with those skills. I can only speak for submarines. Generally deployments are 2-9 months.

You are stationed at boot camp. Then you are stationed wherever the "A" school is for your chosen rate. You get to state your preference for where you want to go during your "A" school, but there is no guarantee you will get it. Being top of the class might help you get your pick. Try not to get stationed close to old influences is my advice, but you know your situation better than anyone else.

My wife was illegal and got residency and citizenship all while I was in. Immigration even has expedited processing for military dependents. I was just upfront and never lied about anything and was fine.

I wont say exactly what I do, but I have been in 13 years, am in a tech rate and have been an E-7 for about 3 years.

If I could do it again, I would be a submarine cook. They are the only ones that are guaranteed a shower no matter what, they always eat first, they only have to do their job while everyone else is wearing 3 hats. They can eat on watch, listen to music while they work and are generally not prohibited from working on college while on watch. Cooks are generally lower intelligence, so if you are smart and motivated you will rise to the top very quickly. Just dont choose to be a Nuke or Missle Tech. Their lives are miserable. I am not a recruiter so have no incentive to lie.

I am not denying this, but advancement is slower and it is even more political than other branches. Plus their recruiters are the hardest to get a hold of and work with, especially for someone with any criminal history.

Nah, it has to do with their day to day life. Dont feel like typing it all out so you just have to trust me. Anything except those two rates. Like most things you will get out of it what you put into it. Work on the attitude thing, it will limit you. You can overcome it through hard work. As far as fights, they are rare in my experience, we are grown men and can solve our problems other ways 99.9% of the time. Fights are just not worth it, you will get demoted most of the time, or worse if you hurt yourself or someone else while on deployment.

As far as shit social skills, I wouldnt worry about it, living in close quarters to all your best friends and worst enemies for months at a time will sort you out.

I came into the Navy with nothing and now own 2 homes outright and am able to invest over 3k per month and still live fine. It took sacrifice, patience and hard work but was worth it in the long run. It has genuinely made me a better person, but could have easily done the opposite with a different attitude or a negative lens on the world.

More advice. Take advantage of the TSP and never have a car payment.
