Okay I guess I'm still a newfag or I just never really understood how Ethereum works. But can someone explain gwei and gas fees to me? What does it mean that "439 gwei = $15.68" in OP's pic? Because if you try to do a Uniswap transaction with gas set to 439 it costs more like $150.
I got a gas price alert extension for Chrome and I don't understand that either, because I set it to alert me if gas goes below e.g. 100 gwei and it just keeps triggering even though it shows gas at over 400.
So I guess "gas price" isn't an average transaction, but what IS it exactly? What is the relationship between gas price in gwei and the fee you actually end up paying?

network overload probably means you have to pay more since lots more transactions have to be verified so higher demand for validation, so cost goes up, you can set the gas fee as low as you want but you could be waiting days for it to go through when others will be ahead of you if they have put down a higher transaction fee

Eth has amazing layer 2 solutions already though. Look at SNX. Instant and free transactions using ETH.

It’s a big problem with ETH, but it’s hard to discount that ETHs network is massive compared to every other “eth killer”. I just don’t find it plausible that an eth killer comes around and builds the network that will flip ETH before ETH goes 2.0.

Buy a hedge against ETH, for safety, but I don’t see it failing.

No Anon, you don't get what I'm asking. I'm asking why the gwei "gas price" is different from the quoted price using that gas price.
In pic related, OP's pic shows that 439 gwei is $15.68. But if I actually try to use 439 gwei in Metamask, it quotes me 158eur/$190.
So I assume making the transaction actually costs me much more than 439 gwei. But in that case, I don't understand what the 439 gwei gas price is actually referring to. Is there some kind of 'base level' fee that would cost 439 gwei, and then any more complicated transaction on top of that adds further costs? Why do I not just enter the full price I want to pay in gwei (which I guess would be 110,000,000)?

PSA for newfags, you can change the gas limit in your wallet. By default, it will set it to a price to process the transaction ASAP; if you put a lower fee limit it may take up to an hour to complete but you can pay less in gas. Don't set it too low though or it'll get stuck

Perfect, that's exactly what I was trying to work out. Thanks!
But since gas limit is called gas *limit*, I always assumed the transaction might not necessarily need to use that much gas... so is the price you're quoted a maximum, or are you basically committing to spending that much no matter what?

>> No.28097398

>>28097109
not sure what you're getting at. do you think loopring is not part of ethereum? it is true L2, that is, an offchain solution secured by rollups and transmitting proofs to ethereum L1. rollups are the scaling solution for ethereum. this is not a "tomorrow" thing, it works right now, but normies are slow to adopt anything new

>> No.28097579

>>28097280
yes, you have it correctly: it is a maximum, and any extra will be refunded automatically
if you explore your transactions on etherscan right after you send one, you will notice most of your transactions will have gas limits below the maximum (eth transfers excepted, these will always be 21k)
etherscan even makes it easy for you with a "Gas Used by Transaction" right under Gas Limit
