Ava has a primary network that consisted of 3 main blockchains.

X-chain for exchanges
P-chain for creating new blockchains
C-chain for running smart contract.

The C-chain is EVM based so you can literally copy paste any smart contract from ethereum and it will run.

When they say you can connect with metamask you add a custom network for the C-Chain in the metamask and it works because it's EVM based
