someone redpill me on purchasing a car. right now i drive a 20 year old shitbox and im getting tired or working on it. i want to get a toyota for muh reliability. where do i find one for a decent price? do i buy new?

If you have some money and want something reliable without breaking the bank, you have two options: One, look for a car with roughly 30k miles on it. Usually they've depreciated some but still come with some warranty. You can find single-owners pretty easily. The second, if you want something even nicer, you look for cars with weird options or overinflated for a specific year so that last years models are still fucking around on lots. A good example of the former off the top of my head would be an automatic transmission for a typically manual car like a Miata. You'd be amazed at how you can get a basically new car (sub 1k miles) for 20% off of MSRP if you shop around. Oh, also for cars that are basically new but not-- consider buying from somewhere else and just paying for the shipping. Some markets are significantly cheaper than others.

There's a balance and the dude obviously knows how to work on his own vehicles. New cars depreciate crazy fast. I'd say it's only worth it if the manufacturer is offering some kind of deal for the interest rate that makes it that good. Otherwise, save several grand and just get something with reasonably low miles, still a bit of warranty. Also, do your fucking research about what models actually have reliability.

Be realistic with your budget. Are you going to pay straight cash or are you getting a loan? If you go with a loan, make sure you don't over extend yourself with a car payment like some new money nigger. Car Guru is a pretty good site to see what's available in your area. Also look into independent dealers by the typical flagship ones. You can occasionally find a good deal. And always have a mechanic you trust give it an inspection before buying. 4runners are based OP. I own a 2020 TRD Pro and love it. I don’t see myself parting with it. Toyota imho reached the perfect sweet spot in what you actually/realistically need when it comes to reliability, comfort and ruggedness.

No, it doesn’t have a powerful V8 like a Landcruiser, or a front solid axle like a Jeep Wrangler, or some fancy ecoboost system like a Ford Raptor, but on a day to day real use basis it will crawl over any obstacle, reliably, while being very comfortable and providing like 90 cubic square feet of interior space.

Also the seats fold down 100% flat on the trim with the slide out tray which is a feature that every fucking truck should have.

I have been told that I am the best negotiator around. I wore out the entire Toyota Dealership when buying a used IS350 on there lot (it was a trade in). It took approx 8-9 hours of constant negotiation before we reached an agreement on price. I burned through 2 salesmen and finished with their manager. Negotiating is an art, you need to learn every trick in the book. The dealership is there to fuck you in the ass , especially on used vehicles. They make more on used sales than new. Learn to negotiate, it can save you a lot of money. One trick is to not say anything when they counter. Just sit there silently, the silence drives them crazy. Also walk away and tell them you need some time to think and walk around the lot on you phone while they watch you from the office.Complain about the condition of the used vehicle, paint, smell, tires, brakes, etc. What ever they ask for cut them down at least 30-40 % if it's a used car and start from there. They are going to look at you like you raped their wives but fuck them. They will come back with the original price and you tell them no fucking way. Remember they payed half of what they are asking for that used vehicle. Fuck I wish I could negotiate for people for a living, I could save them so much money.
