I am a newb but yesterday when I learned gas fees exist I immediately swapped for avax but was only charged the 1% trading fee of the exchange I trade on.

What am I missing?

I transferred a hundred bucks into the wrong wallet yesterday, basically evaporated cause that wallet won’t read it. Not a lot of money but still, hundred bucks is a hundred bucks

>the exchange
If your coins are all held by an exchange and you're trading within an exchange then you won't be paying gas because (roughly) the exchange holds most of their coins in cold storage and your account is just a database held by the exchange. Nothing actually gets transfers (and thus nothing requires gas) unless you withdraw from the exchange to your own wallet.

I was trying to move usdc from coinbase into binance to avoid gas fees, then cover usdc into the coin I wanted. But I moved it into the binance smart chain, which doesn’t read usdc, instead of straight into my binance account. I didn’t realize there was a difference, guess it’s my dumbass fault. So maybe if they update the wallet someday I’ll get my hundred bucks back. Oh well
