Found out I have an old random wallet with 1k worth on ETH on it. Does anyone know how to search for a ETH wallet private key in file system? I have it saved somewhere but it seems impossible to find.

Search the entire drive by file types. I'd imagine it's a text file?

C:\WINDOWS\system32

Delete everything in that folder and restart. It’s like clearing the WTF folder to fix World of Warcraft. Windows will recreate a fresh system32 with most of your files catalogued in there.

depends when it's from
1k eth, so I am thinking pre ETC.
What you will be looking for is a file that ends in .json

Hope you remember the password. I've been trying to crack mine since 2017

It's on a mac. I saved the file without an extension. Maybe there is some regex for that, that would be more helpful I guess

Let me know if you need help if you find it and your password dosent work. I've helped a few people get their eth back.I charge 10% Can take 15 minutes to a year or never to crack, depending on how much of your password you remember.

The file will be at date like, UTC 01-01-2017 (Wallet Address).json

cmd + space can be sometimes helpful, try some file names like ethereum/password or something that u might have used back then, if not get omnidisksweeper and browse every folder manually, cant go wrong with that

you can either search by filename, or file contents. Searching by file contents should be your second move since it'll take longer.
also consider limiting search by date.
do you know any programming?
yeah, an ethereum address is 64 hex digits, so a regex would be something like [a-fA-F0-9]{64}

Create a new wallet with the same software you used and search for its location. Or did you manually copy the wallets files by yourself to this computer?

Seems that ack (installed via homebrew) is a good tool for searching file content by regex, will check though the outputs. Didn't bother playing with find & grep.

ack -w "[a-fA-F0-9]{64}"

you can also try brew install the-silver-searcher

I'm going for dinner now, hope you find it
