Yeah, the risk is that the stock price goes down so the 100 shares you have to hold are worth less, although you can offset some of the dip by selling options for cash. When you sell a call you're partly selling the risk of holding those shares.

You should always be selling OTM calls unless you expect the stock to take a nosedive. Yes, the nice thing about covered calls is that although you need to buy the 100 shares, you can only lose the value of those 100 shares based on price fluctuations.

Every call you sell is an OTM call. You would never sell an ITM call. You would stand to lose the entire 100 shares backing the contract should the underlying fall within the strike price. Once the expiration date passes and the underlying is not within the strike price, the call expires worthless, and you keep the sale of the contract. It really is that simple, but understand that it's akin to picking up nickles in front of a steamroller.

I'm trying to get into algotrading.

At the moment I am categorising days based on whether they would be buy, sell, or hold, then using machine learning to attempt to predict this.

After some experimenting I think that this is the wrong route to go down. Predicting the next day direction purely based on price history (and indicators based on that), is obviously not possible.

Should I be looking at longer term forecasting? Focus on optimising position sizing, etc rather than specific entry timing?

It did take a fucklong time but NO it did NOT take 39 years. It took It took 7-8. The original date for aquadvantage salmon was based on post-doctoral work, it was nowhere near related to business at the time.
