I prefer software or paper wallets because I'm terrified of a hardware wallet failing.
With software/paper, you'll never lose your coins as long as you have the key phrases. I keep several handwritten copies of my key phrases, stored in places where no one will ever find them.

A hardware wallet just makes sure your private key never gets exposed.
If you need to validate a transaction, the machine sends a prompt to your hardware wallet and you physically interact with it to sign and send back.

What if you have a virus which screenshots when you show your private key on MetaMask? Or some keylogger catches your private key.
