Step 1: learn to properly evaluate stocks on a Fundamental Analysis first and then optionally also Technical Analysis
Step 2: learn the difference between calling and putting, writing (selling) versus holding (buying), break-evens versus strike prices versus spot prices, exercising versus assignment versus expiration, and setting up spreads (both writing and holding both calls and puts over a time period/series of periods) versus single positions (just buying or selling calls or puts)
>Step 3: commit
try buying a hundred shares of a low cap stock, such as Nokia (like 500 bucks right now, not bad), or holding a call, and once either you bought the stock or exercised the call, try the other end and sell a covered call. If you lose money or make money, you'll have learned.
The more you trade, the better you'll do as long as you're actually learning and applying learning.

I saw a lot of friends go both ways on this, both think I'm an idiot because I set up covered calls and built my wealth slowly except for this momentum trade mania.

This is how options work, very generally.
I would seriously take the time to read investopedia's articles about it before I would get into it.
