Buying at 13 a share was not a bad investment, unless you already folded your paperback hands. Hedgies were short ladder attacking the hell out of all the shorted stocks today, compare the charts. Buying into AMC is a lot better than being on the GME ride imo since movies aren't going away any time soon. Yes, basically. Just a couple of points:

You can short as long as you want, but it's not free. You borrowed the shares, so you have to pay interest on them to the broker that lent them. You also have to put up collateral (in case you go bankrupt or can't afford to return the shares). If you borrowed shares at $10, and the price jumps to $20, you're losing your short, and the broker will demand even MORE collateral and interest payments from you, because there's a higher risk that you won't be able to afford to buy back the shares and return them. If it goes to $40, it gets even harder. At some point, you might to decide to accept some loss and buy a portion of the shares back at the higher price to return them to the broker. By you buying those shares though... you will push the price even higher, making it worse for the rest of the shares you shorted, and for everyone else who shorted. This can cause a feedback loop, and THIS is a Short Squeeze. Higher prices => more shorters exiting => buying more shares => higher prices... Basically, pushing the price up makes it harder for shorters to not buy, but you can't really *force* them to buy. That's why it's called a Squeeze.

The feedback loop with the options is called a Gamma Squeeze. They both can have the same effect on share price, but they work differently. They can also happen at the same time, or you can try to start a Gamma Squeeze to trigger a Short Squeeze (my understanding is that's how GME started).

Also: options have expiration dates, typically Fridays. If the option is ITM, I think they auto-exercise. That's why Thursdays and Fridays are usually key dates.
