You pay ordinary income tax on short-term capital gains. If you hold the stock for a year or more you pay much less in taxes. Depends on what tax bracket you're in but 20% is max long term capital gains tax. But also losses offset gains so it really depends on your specific situation.

I live in Canada. Only 50% of my capital gains are counted towards my taxable income. Making $250 profit off Nokia isn't going to affect my taxes much but I can re-invest that money now or use it for a really nice date with the better half.

The worry is being labeled as a day trader where 100% of my profits are taxable income, but the CRA is pretty lax about classifying someone as a day trader. You gotta be making multiple trades per day and have significant profits for them to really give a shit.
