He's an idiot. 1 call = 100 shares. Not calls. Also, he didn't buy them, he must've wrote them, or negative NAV would be impossible. Moral: don't touch options if you're either a newfag or <120 IQ

I wish I wasn’t lazy enough to make a green text version of the guy who sold those calls to him

unless he was using margin, i fail to see how he could get himself into debt by going long a call.
if the broker exercised the options on a loan but in between exercise of the option and sale of the stock then yea, but that would also require the broker to be a dumbass.

He bought contracts, not calls.

How is it $170 a day? Even a mortgage for 300k is only $70 a day

it doesn’t matter either way, even if the poster though a contract was bunch of call options the same principle would apply.
i assume the error is just the brokers software being retarded + settlement timing.

The most you could lose is the premium. 570 strikes when they got released had massive premiums since IV was insane last week 100 contracts. Say at ~$85 premium (can't remember actual). (85*100)*100 would be 850k. Which again he probably shouldn't be cleared for that on margin

couldn't you declare bankruptcy and absolve yourself of the debt? assuming you don't have any assets they would go after during the court proceedings.

You could, but my guess is the kid had some assets, otherwise he wouldn’t have gotten so much fucking margin from his broker.
