I have an engineering degree (mechanical) but I’ve been stuck at the same shitty company since graduation. All I want is a comfy wfh job with decent pay. I’m trying to figure out what I can learn to make it happen (AWS, web dev, python, whatever)

I've learned something about this. Typically, they're trying to replace the guy who left the position with someone with similar credentials. If they previous guy worked about 5 years plus or minus a year, and he gets promoted or leaves the company, they'll look for someone with a similar level of experience, even if the previous guy started straight out of school.

This means is regardless of the 5 year requirement, if you apply - there's a fair chance some employers will follow up with you.

I'm a sperg with an IQ of 137 and could not finish college because I am totally incapable of writing 30 page reports on bullshit like history, as required by the classes that were available to me at the time. I can communicate the exact same ideas in 3 pages but it's not "proper". I write so poorly my grammatical skills are eternally degrading because I rarely even talk to people. That, and I just can't fucking do work I'm not interested in or being paid for. I can not fucking fathom paying to do work I hate. College doesn't just select for intelligence, it simultaneously selects for the subservient and gleefully self flagellating. Exactly the kind of person a corporation wants in their offices.

After being kicked out my dad for fucking one of his horses (he thought it was the first time so i only got punched once, if only he knew lmao) I went from $3 to $70k net worth in a year and I never, ever intend to be a corporate slave. Death before servitude.

This one goes straight to the feels. I have a doctorate and was at the top of my class with excellent marks and all that bullshit. Worked in a lab during grad school and have been published several times in good journals, etc. Graduated and afterwards tried getting an industry job in my field. Was immediately treated like I was lower than dirt by everyone I was even able to get a measly phone interview with because "lmao you don't already have years of experience xD".

After wasting my time with this shit for months to no avail, the *BEST* I was able to even get somewhere with was some place on the other side of the company where they'd basically be paying college-intern-tier salary and even then it would only be a fucking 6 month CONTRACTOR JOB with zero benefits and absolutely no guarantees of even getting to stick with the company after. And in the likely event that that happens, I'm stuck on the other side of the country holding the bag. Fuck that.

Based. Keep the lights on Jack.

By the way guys if you want better odds, work with a headhunter. It sucks if you don't have the money to hire one but if you do have the money it's 100% worth it to not have to fuck around with sending out random applications and get rejected or not hear back. Sadly I didn't know about this when I was a NEET after college so I wound up joining the military (big mistake, don't do it). Also in the meantime anyone with a bachelors can work as a substitute teacher in most school districts without a teaching credential. Just be prepared for the call at 6 or 7am asking you if you're available to cover and be professional and you'll be okay. Again, something I didn't know when I was a NEET.

The problem ultimately boils down to "academic inflation" (for lack of a better term). At first, degree-holders were the cream of the crop and highly desirable, especially for professions where the specialized knowledge was genuinely necessary. But then everyone saw this and thought that literally everyone should get degrees so that they could be successful as well. All this ended up doing was devaluing education with an overabundance of degree-holders. In addition, because there were so many prospective hirees with college education, this meant that employers would immediately filter anyone without a degree, even for jobs that don't really need one, because why the fuck not. Suddenly jobs that used to be done by people with a HS diploma right out of school suddenly need a bachelor's and several years experience for a starting position.

And honestly, when it comes to these a lot of these jobs where the college education isn't actually necessary at all to do the work, it's better to just straight-up fucking lie about it. Just put on your CV that you got a bachelors in whatever from wherever. No employer (besides government jobs) is ever going to do a background check on that shit. Same goes with work experience. Just fucking make it up. They won't check it, and it's the only way nowadays to make it.

That's the only way I was finally able to manage a decent job.
