what would happen if we all started trading in gold and silver instead of fiat? could we potentially form a shadow economy or even a shadow nation

It wouldn't work because as long as people are willing to accept dollars/euros/etc anyone that receives a dollar as payment and also has gold/silver will then immediately use the dollar to pay for his next purchase becasuse that person will prefer holdig gold/silver to dollars

Buying shiny metals to start a shadow nation.
Sounds about right for a clown world.

In a free market, wages constantly rise as prices fall.
This is counter to the current economy where inflation destroys our wages and leftists cheer.

I love the movie version of that song. Shame they never release a record of it. The Fred Astaire version is subpar IMO.

The internal linchpin of the system is the requirement to pay taxes using USD. Besides that, there’s no particular reason why you couldn’t use a pure PM based currency, where the money is defined by weights of gold and silver.

Literally tomorrow you could in theory replace the US dollar with the old £sd. currency, in which a £ is literally a pound weight of silver, a shilling was one-twentieth of a pound, and penny (d) was one-twelfth of a shilling. You could do this even in the absence of any legislation, using a simple weighing scales, a keen eye and a calculator.

The problem is that 80%+ of Americans own no silver or gold, and therefore have no way to pay for goods with precious metals.

The only merchant who could afford to unconditionally demand precious metals for his wares would have to be some kind of exclusive and eccentric master craftsman, chef or artist who can basically make whatever demands of the customer he wants, and make them compete for the right to patronize him.

An ordinary storekeeper with competitors can’t really afford to do this, not even for example the average gun storekeeper or other business associated with say the prepper community.

i actually randomly bought gold and silver after watching the film 2 weeks ago, you can literally see that gold is the only real wealth when you compare then to now

>They'd just make gold illegal again
that might have worked when america was a high trust society, but I think that would legitimately trigger a civil war or dissolution of the union with such a diverse and divided US that we are currently living in

wut?
I'm cool with something like a metal standard, but I don't understand why you're saying prices would fall while wages rise. That seems incredibly contradictory. Shouldn't wages just keep pace with prices?

>> No.27379420

We did. It was called America

According to the coinage act of 1871, only Congress can “coin” money

A banking dictionary will tell you that “real money” is precious metals alone

Crime would rise.
International settlements would fail because of restrictions on gold/silver.
People would starve to death trying to lug around enough shiny rocks without being mugged for their entire net worth at any given time.

OP is obviously talking gold/silver standard. People wouldn't literally be lugging around bars of metal in their pockets to buy shit.
