Maybe a special rule is created allowing these companies to issue new shares to 'curb volaitiliy' or some other lame excuse.

Maybe the brokers from whom these short sale shares were borrowed negotiate a settlement where the shares can't be returned, yet they are compensated nicely.

I don't know how it will play out, but I am old enough to know there's no option where they bankrupt their companies, liquidating everything to give to reddit neckbeards.
