At least it's clean. My wife is a realtor so she can pull up more detailed listings, one of the warnings on this was "hostile vagrants residing on property, must see with sheriff escort," and they lost the house by defaulting on a $10k loan. Only $300k though super cheap for California.

There is a reason there’s no “modern homesteaders” doing that; every single lot is encumbered with a fuckload of back taxes, back utilities, late fees, liens, etc to the point where even if you had the money to pay them they’re so tangled up that you’d have a hard time figuring out how. And the municipalities are so buttfuck upside down financially that they CANNOT do the smart thing and put mechanisms in place to cap or waive those things to incentivize people moving back in.

The administrative morass has literally created wildlife preserves that will probably never get redeveloped.

Usually units like this have a tax lean against the house worth far greater than the value of the house. The city puts them up for sale for practically nothing hoping an investor will think it's worth it when considering the hidden cost.

Where there is a political will, there is no practical way. The entire rest of the country has been telling them to cut their losses since the 70. That’s right - a lot of those lots have 50 YEARS of back taxes etc.
