The real redpill is this:
Clearing houses all lead back to the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC)

The DTCC owns the Depository Trust Company (DTC), which basically handles the bookkeeping of the market while keeping custody of the actual assets by registering ownership of them under their subsidiary: Cede & Company.

Cede & Co. technically owns substantially all of the publicly issued stock in the United States. Thus, investors do not themselves hold direct property rights in stock, but rather have contractual rights that are part of a chain of contractual rights involving Cede...

Then you get to the real deal which is the SEC gives the DTC (a private company) full authority to restrict trading activity, sometime INDEFINITELY, on any securities that they own (which they own EVERYTHING).
