Well yes, it's not their book per se but show you the book based on what is happening for that broker. So in RHs case Citadel bought the right to execute their trades, they want the order flow so that they can front runt RH customers.

Because every trade is settled t+2, meaning two days after execution. During those two days RH will have to post collateral in order to make sure that the trade is settled. Normally this isn't a problem because you buy $AAPL at $100 and sell at $110 for example while the volume isn't abnormal. But now you have people buying at $60 and selling at $300 and the volume is massive. Based on risk, now the collateral you need to post is higher, plus the cost for each trade goes up. Which means in the case of RH, maybe they can handle a day or two posting collateral, after that the costs are so high that they need to borrow money to post collateral each day, it's a liquidity problem which is why they halted trading.

The fee would be the increased margin requirements. Collateral is posted as an insurance because it sits for two days during which either side could default. Usually you post collateral at the start of every trading day, but during these times I'd assume RH gets called intraday to post even more collateral, meaning they would have to go out and borrow probably billions within a few hours or the next day.

This is what's actually happening. These meme stocks now have literal billions of dollar being traded in and out every hour or so. GME's market cap alone is now in the tens of billions and the volume on it is insane. The SEC requires brokers to have sufficient collateral to cover the trades but RH is feeling an extreme squeeze since RH is the go to app for younger retail traders. Boomer brokers like Schwab and Fidelity have no issues currently.

Robinhood probably will if you guys can crash it Monday (Friday would've been better).
