Short interest will keep increasing even if there is a short squeeze. The higher the price goes and the more disconnected from the fundamentals it is the more juicy the short looks like from the perspective of an asset manager. If some funds go bankrupt the shares will be quickly taken up by some other fund and shorted from a higher entry price. And they have trillions of dollars to play compared to the $200 accounts from retail FOMOers. Not that the squeeze didn't have institutions behind it, but at some point those will take their profits and go home. They probably have better data than us on how high they needed to drive up the price to get most of the low hanging fruit shorters to cover.

But yes, with a higher entry point which becomes increasingly harder to reach the more people get greedy on the downside. Remember that there are people who are buying at 300 to push the price up, and they will also try to sell above break even. All we have learned is that there is a Mexican standoff between two sides who are not very deeply underwater. That's an equilibrium we should reasonably expect to continue. It gets scarier to long or scarier to short, fast. I'm not trying to recommend one side of the trade or the other, I'm just sharing the only up to date perspective on the squeeze that makes sense to me, and it indicates potential infinite losses for the shorts is still possible IF the pressure collapses in that direction.
I would be more wary of the side with infinite risk.
