What is "pay for order flow" (PFOF)?

This is what makes zero-commission trading possible. So-called "market makers" are paying brokerage firms for routing trades through them. This way they can perform analytics on your trades, and use their information advantage to profit off the market. Although they are not allowed to directly front-run your trade, they are frontrunning the impact your trade has on the market.

All the discount brokerages began PFOF after Robinhood opened their $0 trading service.
Although on their website they pretend this is some minor piece of their revenue, it's actually the great majority of their income. All of the firms are getting rebates, but Robinhood in particular is getting 10x the rebates of anyone else (literally). They are raking in hundreds of millions, and refusing to provide SEC disclosures to their customers. The SEC disclosure regulations are very weak, and they are taking full advantage of this.

Nobody really knows what they're doing exactly. Front-running trades? Analyzing investment patterns of talented investors? Selling your data? Who knows.
We do know the founders of Robinhood previously helped program High Frequency Trading systems, such as the system used by Citadel.

Citadel is Robinhood's MAIN market-maker. Robinhood and citadel are basically one in the same.
They sometimes use various smaller market-makers, but the huge bulk of their business is with Citadel, who has paid them 100s of millions, in comparison to the 10's of millions that LARGER firms are getting.

A few years ago, these people were doing poor-execution trades. That's where they sell your trade for a few cents below what they are supposed to, and then pocket the difference. This was made illegal by SEC regulations which force market makers to offer the Best Price on the market, but it shows you the depths of their immorality.

I would have except while im paying for it, it's in my parents name. Said parents are divorceing so money is tight, and I live rural as shit. I was at 11k and was forced to sell at the bottom of the dip at 4600.... right before it reversed back..... even though I knew it would reverse becase of my obligations. Personally I only use fidelity for the brokerage because I have a credit union account I’m well established in. I wouldn’t hesitate to fidelity’s services like checking and bill pay etc. tho. I’ve never had a problem with them.

There's a difference between the money that your account lists and the amount that's been cleared, though. RH usually hides that difference to make the buying experience smoother. It takes multiple days after you sell a stock for the money to truly be in your account
