A lot of people buying GME don't know why and many are buying surrounding stock for no real reason, just because it's a bandwagon, and if it goes up it must be a good bandwagon, which means more people buy into it, and so on.

Because the shorts HAVE to buy back the stock on or before the expiration date. The reason this is working is that these big funds HAVE NO CHOICE because they already contractually borrowed some shares and now have to return them (no matter the price). So the idea is that it's not a bunch of losers piling into a stock, and 90% of them end up bagholders. What's happening is people are trying to force funds to buy expensive stocks from them to meet their obligations.
