true. you gotta play the simulation and just treat "the stock market" more or less like 2-3 separate elements: large, small, int'l. total stock vs. total bond indexes are the simplest lever you can manipulate for gains that outpace the stock market itself.

for example, the meme virus relief resulted in billionaires doing to their own stock what reddit is currently doing to gamestop. hence VTSAX trading close to $100 when it went from $80 to $55 to $90 in the last year, even though many retail/service companies, rent payments, student loan payments, and huge swaths of economic activity in general stood still, rotting.
