I’ve been trading for decades and I can tell you from experience unfortunately that you can be blown out of a trade and force liquidated no matter what else is going on and for small amounts of money they can liquidate large positions, like you have 20$ less than is required to hold a 200,000$ position they will call you, you pay or if you don’t answer or pay they liquidate your position with a market order and you are fucked. it’s all about how much money you have on reserve to hold the margin overnight it has almost nothing at all to do with the underlying fundamentals. (A little because they set margins requirements depending on the underlying so you’ll have to use less capital to hold an equivalent position in say intel vs GameStop cause intel is boring and GameStop is on fire right now.). It’s linked to volatility and other things I’m not about to give you a whole lesson on the market in this post.

Hedge funds are a bit different in that they are their own lenders in essence and so they operate at much higher margins. For example you may be able to use 20x leverage they can do 100x or whatever.

When a bunch of normal people get liquidated it causes big moves, when a hedge fund is forced to liquidate it causes historic moves.
