The hedgefund has to buy 140% of the GameStop stocks in existence by Friday. Or else they cannot close their position which they are required to.

They obviously have to buy several of those stocks several times even. They didn't plan for people to buy GameStop. They shorted it to make people sell and lower the price.

If the price is $1000 on Friday then that is the price they have to pay. Most people keep selling for $1000 it seems. But that is just the first set. When they have bought and given back stocks to their creditors then the creditors can sell those stocks again and they know that the hedgefund has to buy them at some point so they likely put the price higher than the market price and the hedgefund still has to buy.

They can extend their deadline, but then they have to pay an incredible amount of interest and there is no guarantee that prices will go down during the weekend if they do that. It might even go up.
