I mean it's not even that, it's just that what's their endgame? If the stock really crashes they're maybe doubling their money if it hits 2.50. And I mean, it did go down a few times. Sept $7.50 to Sept $6 was a decent short opportunity and they probably made an okay amount of money from that. Oct $15 to Nov $11 was another great opportunity, an entire $4 difference.
Problem is that when it goes the other way, it goes from like $20 on the 11th to $40 on the 14th. That's bad enough to wipe out the previous two shorts, and then it goes from $40 to fucking $80 and now their hilarious shorts that might have made them like a $5 margin are costing them no less than $60 per share.
I can understand shorting GME right now, while it's highly volatile and overvalued since there's huge money to be made (even if the risk is large) if you short at the right time of day but shorting a stock that's barely worth anything and unironically undervalued seems like a terrible idea because there is so much potential for loss and barely any gain. High risk, low reward.

What I like to tell people is that options are similar to bets on horse races where you can actually continue trading the bets around during the race. You can bet on a horse, and in the middle of the race, if your horse is up, you can sell your bet to someone else for a nice gain. You may miss out on bigger gains if that horse actually does win, but you're also taking some profits in case it falls behind.

Shorter-dated options (think of this as being closer to the end of the race) are very cheap if they're unlikely to be correct, but can rise stratospherically if they suddenly look like winning bets. My strategy is to hold until the underlying SOXX goes under the 200 day simple moving average. When it falls under I'll sell and buy back in when it goes back above. The theory being if SOXX is under the 200 ma it's trend is down and when that happens volatility is going to naturally pick up which is anathema to 3x leveraged ETFs. Further, when SOXX goes under that level and I sell out, should SOXL itself go more than 50% under its own 200 day, I will just buy back in right there instead of waiting on SOXX to go back above. Reason being historically every time SOXL has gone more than 50% down it has almost immediately rebounded and it happens about once every 2 years like clockwork.

Volatility is deadly for commodity based leveraged ETFs like BOIL and anything based on gold but much less so for index and sector based stuff like SOXL, TQQQ, UPRO, etc. since the latter tend to just go up over time and volatility isn't that bad. Even the huge drops like we had in March aren't enough to drag them down over time. SSO and QLD were leveraged ETFs that made it through the crash in 2008 and both have outperformed their underlying so if you just want to buy and hold chances are you'll come out fine though there are no guarantees.
