Metamask is a digital wallet. You connect your wallet to Uniswap to trade. Metamask itself doesn't fee you. Ether fees fluctuate depending on the traffic, but, yeah, they're pretty high. Like another anon said, it's the only real way to buy some microcap tokens that aren't on exchanges yet.

I don't think the fees are worth it just to buy into some shitcoins. Especially since there's more than enough coins on binance. At least it means I'd be impervious to scams.
