You have to stake it to earn more Aave tokens. Staking it means if there ever was a hack or a default on loan collateral, you'd be liquidated to cover other people's losses.

So far only 20% of Aave token holders actually are staking, the other 80% is just speculatively trading or holding the token. Which means 80% of token holders don't even use the token for what it is intended to be used for.
