Had an amazing job as an ecology lab tech, it was some of the best years of my life. Going out on lakes to catch fish, hanging with locals while eating fried fish eggs and tons of free fish from bycatch. Get back from a long day of trawling with the crew then order a pizza and crack open the bottle of crown to pass around while working up samples. Had to quit since the pay was absolute shit, $12 an hour and required a 4 yrs degree.

i have only worked in a SOC where we are supposed to report on suspicious things to our customers, it's basically just filtering through tons of false positives generated from retards clicking on stuff or scans from the internet. unannounced (internal) reconnaissance scanning or suspicious VPN logins also generate a lot of reports/work. very repetitive work.

Other positions where I work seem a bit boring too. it's stuff like implementing SIEM solutions or some security product (like one of FireEye's) for customers, or patching firewalls or perhaps using some vulnerability scanners and then having to write some massive report for a customer. there's also stuff like mapping signature rules so that whatever intrusion detection used can pick up on certain types of traffic. very very mindnumbing work. most interesting is probably forensics type of work, but it seems to me that the work is TONS of false positives compared to investigating real stuff.

Avoid places that hire external pajeets from multinational outsourcing firms. They are often sometimes hired to do incident handling.

Grad student here, had similar aspirations when I was in college. I learned you have to be nuts to want to do a PhD in a hard sciencen which I am, I further learned you have to be absolutely insane to go even further in academia, which I am not. I agree completely that choosing to make a lot of money so you can become free it more admirable, I just hope I can be so lucky.

Sort of. I became a professional musician because music was a long time passion of mine, but it quickly became just another grind where i was tired of covering the same songs or playing the same standards. Was in a rock band for a bit, and played in a jazz trio that would perform at wineries and classier joints like that. Admittedly i got out before truly pushing myself to the next level, but i generally got the impression that professional live performance didn't fit my personality like i thought it would. There's also a shit load of drugs and alcohol 24/7 and that's not great to be around depending on your personality. Now i just play as a hobby with no pressure to please an audience and I enjoy that a lot more.
