I keep them on a custodial service, because I am a homeless digital nomad.
That being said, I don't see anything wrong with keeping your crypto on an established american exchange like coinbase, off the exchange part and in cold wallet vault.

The reason to keep your corn off exchanges would be to actually use btc as intended, as your own bank and performing your own transactions. I don't care about that and I think nobody else does either.
